GTI Meeting Strengthens Transport Collaboration in NE Asia
BUSAN, 25 June 2010 – Officials and experts called for regional collaboration to promote the transport corridors and enhance connectivity of regional logistics network in NE Asia at the Inaugural Meeting of the GTI Transport Board held on 25 June in Busan, Republic of Korea, following the Expert Seminar on Promoting GTI Transport Projects on 24 June.
The Meeting, organized by the GTI Secretariat and hosted by the Busan Metropolitan City, brought together the representatives of regional governments and transport experts from China, Mongolia, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation and Japan. It concluded with the adoption of the GTI Transport Cooperation Program 2010-2012 along with recommendations on a number of cooperative transport projects.
With an objective to identify opportunities for cooperation in NE Asian transport projects, the Expert Seminar on Promoting GTI Transport Projects was co-organized by the GTI Secretariat and Busan Development Institute, drawing expertise from leading research institutes and think tanks. Participants deliberated on the implementation of the current GTI transport projects, which were earmarked at the 9th GTI Consultative Commission Meeting (Nov. 2007, Vladivostok, Russia), and reaffirmed the importance of these projects for regional transport development. To support the GTI Transport Cooperation Program 2010-2012, participating experts provided a number of recommendations regarding the transport cooperative projects for the consideration of the GTI Transport Board.
During the Inaugural Meeting of the GTI Transport Board, participants emphasized the need to work collectively to promote the NE Asia transport corridors and enhance regional connectivity. Yeo Hyung Koo, Director General of Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, Republic of Korea, was elected as the Chairperson of the GTI Transport Board. The GTI Transport Expert Group was established with the approval of a number of experts.
To further strengthen regional transport cooperation, the GTI Transport Board adopted the GTI Transport Cooperation Program 2010-2012, which included a list of proposed transport projects to be undertaken under the GTI framework. Priority was placed on the project “Integrated Transport and Facilitating Infrastructures Development Plan (Study) for the Trans-GTR Transport Corridors” in the Program implementation.
The Greater Tumen Initiative (GTI) is an intergovernmental cooperation mechanism in Northeast Asia supported by UNDP with the membership of four member countries: China, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation. As a unique platform for economic cooperation in the region, GTI serves as a catalyst for policy dialogue and cooperation in the areas of transportation, energy, tourism, investment and environment.
The GTI Transport Board, convened at the 10th Meeting of the GTI Consultative Commission in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in March 2009, consists of high-level officials from the transport ministries of the GTI member countries. It acts as a platform for the GTI member states to cooperate on the development of transport infrastructure and logistic networks in the region.
